Chapter 45

I was nervous about asking Bobbie Lee for time off because I didn’t want to discuss Richmond with her. I was feeling guilty for not liking him more, and I wished I had thought more about the ramifications of dating a member of my boss’s family.

Seeing Bitsy and Mary on my schedule lightened my mood, though and as always, Mary honed right in on my anxiety and asked, “What’s eating you today, Yankee?”

“You scare me, Mary or am I that transparent?” I asked.

“You look like you’re about to jump out of your skin,” she replied.

“I’m fine. I need some time off.”

“And you’re afraid to tell Bobbie Lee? If she were any more laid back, she’d be dead.”

“No, I’m not scared to ask for time off. I don’t want to bother her is all,” I lied.

“Don’t play poker much, do you? You don’t have to tell me the truth. It’s none of my business, but if anyone knows Bobbie Lee, it’s her G-Mama.”

“I know you do. It’s Richmond,” I admitted.

“The pretty boy brother-in-law?” she asked.

“We’ve been dating and I’m not sure it’s working out. I don’t want Bobbie Lee to be mad at me.”

“Goodness, child, you are workin’ yourself up over nothing. That boy is too white bread for you. You need someone with a little kick to him. And Bobbie Lee won’t care. Just let him down easy.”

“You think so?”

“Lord have mercy, yes. There is no need to carry on about this any longer. Now, get yourself together before you touch my hair. I do not want to pay the price for your messed up love life. Got it?”

“Yes. Ma’am. And thank you, “ I added before I gave her a gentle squeeze.

“No need to get sappy on me, Yankee. Let’s get to work. I don’t have all day.”

“Mona Lisa, grab your lunch and join me in my office,” Bobbie Lee called out.

“Oooh, you’re in trouble,” Amy teased.

I discreetly flipped her the bird and grabbed my bag out of my station drawer and walked back to join the boss. Bobbie Lee was at a small table that had been cleared off and was busy spreading out her food. She motioned for me to sit in the empty chair.

“So, what did I do to deserve an audience with you today?” I asked timidly.

“G-Mama was worried about you and I wanted to make sure you were okay,” Bobbie Lee replied.

“She’s sweet. I love working with her,” I said.

“Wow, something must really be wrong because even G-Mama would laugh at someone callin’ her sweet. So, what’s up?”

I took a drink of my Diet Coke and said, “I need some time off and I’m afraid you’ll be mad at me if I stop dating Richmond.”

Bobbie Lee laughed and said, “Is that all? Well, bless your heart, but you have been worryin’ for no reason at all. You can take time off whenever you need it. You make your own schedule. I don’t say anything unless it gets out of hand. And as far as Richmond goes, I personally don’t see you together.
